If you’re planning an international event in Milan and you know you need an interpreter, the next question is usually: which type? The two most common professional modes are simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, and choosing the right one can make a meaningful difference to your event’s flow, budget and participant experience.
Simultaneous interpreting: real-time, invisible, powerful
In simultaneous mode, the interpreter works in a sound-proof booth (or via a portable system) and translates as the speaker talks. Participants wear headsets and hear the interpretation with a delay of only a few seconds.
This mode is ideal for: large conferences and congresses, plenary sessions with many participants, events where time is precious and cannot be extended by interpretation pauses, and multilingual events with three or more languages.
The trade-off: it requires equipment (booths, headsets, a technician) and — crucially — a team of two interpreters per language pair, as simultaneous interpreting is cognitively demanding and requires regular rotation every 20-30 minutes.
Consecutive interpreting: precise, personal, no equipment required
In consecutive mode, the speaker delivers a segment (usually 2-5 minutes), then pauses while the interpreter renders it in the target language. The interpreter takes notes and reproduces the content with high fidelity.
This mode is ideal for: press conferences, high-level bilateral meetings, ceremonial occasions and speeches, site visits and factory tours, and small groups where the back-and-forth dynamic is valuable.
The trade-off: it roughly doubles the time needed for any spoken content. For a one-hour presentation, plan for two hours. This is not a disadvantage in the right context: it actually allows speakers to feel heard and understood.

• Large conference (50+ people), tight schedule → Simultaneous
• Board meeting, negotiation, 4–10 people → Consecutive or Liaison
• Press conference, keynote Q&A → Consecutive
• VIP factory/venue tour → whispered simultaneous + consecutive
• Live TV or broadcast → Simultaneous (media-adapted)
